The Wider World: Magnetic Healing

Light on Healing from other times, places and Therapies

Magnetic Healing is a type of healing which involves the use of magnets. Like many healing methods, it has its roots in antiquity. Cleopatra, who lived between 69 and 30 B.C., is said to have worn a small natural magnet on her forehead to preserve her youth and beauty. Chinese manuscripts dating back thousands of years tell of the Eastern belief that the life force, or ‘Chi’ is linked with the earth’s magnetic field.

What we call the magnetic force or field is something that you learn about in Physics, at school. Everyone can remember playing with magnets and a piece of iron and being fascinated by the pull they have for each other. Everyone has surely done the experiment with magnets and iron filings, to show the magnetic fields then drawn the patterns before identifying the north and south poles of the magnets.

The centre of the Earth is a huge magnet and with the gravitational pull of the earth, it produces a magnetic field. That it is essential for human health, was discovered after astronauts were first put into space. It was found that their immune systems were weakened while they were away from the Earth’s magnetic field. Scientists from NASA realised that this was because of the lack of magnetic force in space, so, nowadays, space suits and space craft are lined with special magnets.

There are places on Earth that have higher levels of magnetic energy: these are Sedona in Arizona and Lourdes in France. However, the Earth’s natural magnetic field has decreased by 5% over the last one hundred years. Nowadays, we also live in a kind of ‘electro-magnetic smog’, as we make frequent use of phones, computers and televisions.

Magnetic Healing uses magnets for health and healing purposes. Today its use is well established in other countries, including Japan, China, Russia and Germany. Since 2006, the NHS has prescribed magnets for the treatment of ulcers.

It is important to use good quality magnets, such as those available from Norstar biomagnetics
